Severe earthquake shakes Haiti

14.08.2021

14.08.2021: Haiti was nearly devastated by a massive earthquake 11 years ago. The capital Port-au-Prince was at the epicenter of the 7.3 magnitude earthquake and particularly affected at the time. More than 220,000 people lost their lives, over 300,000 were injured and one million children and adults lost their homes. Today, the hard-hit country was hit with a series of shocks by an earthquake of magnitude 7.2.

A series of quakes hit large regions at 8:29 a.m. local time. This time, however, the epicenter was not the densely populated capital Port-au-Prince, but about 12 kilometers northeast of Saint-Luis du Sud. In total, about 843,000 people live in the regions affected by strong to very strong tremors.

BRH is currently reviewing the various deployment options with its partner organization, I.S.A.R Germany.
